    Geriatrics

My name is Ella, a geriatrics nurse practitioner, in Sheba Tel HaShomer Medical Center.

What made you practice nursing?

My favorite game in my childhood had been taking care of sick dolls. I set up a hospital for them where I treated my dolls; I injected them with injections, gave them pills, took their temperatures, and checked them with a statoscope. I caressed every doll and encouraged her that soon she would be better. I wrapped my dolls with blankets and put them to bed.

Already as a child, I was a nurse, for my dolls

At the age of 20, when I finished my studies, I started working as a nurse in a hospital.

When I immigrated to Israel, I was accepted as a practical nurse in the Internal Medicine Department. A wide variety of options in many medical fields opened up to me, options that provided a medical response from a nurse to the patients. However, I needed to improve my professional knowledge.

Over the years, and while working full-time, I expanded my learning. I took a certification course and several professional courses; I completed a bachelor's degree in nursing, and then a master's degree in Gerontology. Furthermore, I transferred to work in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit.

I was offered to take part in the first geriatrics nurse practitioner course in Israel. I considered it an opportunity both for professional development, for expanding the scope of authority, and for enhancing my interest at work.

I realized it would also be an opportunity to take part in improving the quality of service for the elderly. Therefore, I decided to receive the offer.

Where are you today?

I started working in the Rehabilitative Geriatrics Department as a geriatrics nurse practitioner while making acquaintance with a new clinical field and assimilating the role.

During the last six years, I have been working in the orthopedic layout of a large medical center as a geriatric nurse practitioner. I manage the therapy layout for elderly people with hip fractures, from admission to the E.R. until their discharge.

I am thrilled and content with the privilege to share my knowledge and long-lasting experience with patients and their families. I am happy with the opportunity to promote the geriatrics nurse practitioner's profession, and to work in full cooperation with a multi-professional team.
