Pain control nurse practitioners provide comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients suffering from acute and chronic pain. What does the curriculum include and how to apply?
The field of pain expertise is concerned with providing treatment to the population of patients suffering from chronic disease as well as patients suffering from acute pain following therapeutic procedures, injuries and acute illness in order to preserve for these patients and their family members, in all stages of the illness, a reasonable quality of life, optimal functioning, promoting comfort and preventing suffering, by providing comprehensive, professional and available to balance and regulate pain care.
The main activity of pain control nurse practitioners:
- Monitoring and direct treatment of patients suffering from acute and chronic pain.
- Referral to laboratory tests, imaging and professional consultants.
- Starting medication, balancing and changing medication for pain relief, sleep and relaxation, balancing symptoms; nausea and vomiting.
- Locating and identifying side effects and complications as a result of pain treatment and providing treatment accordingly.
- Identifying emergency situations and providing first aid.
- Performing unique treatments recognized to be performed by the pain specialist nurse as part of the treatment plan.
- Promoting health and quality of life for the patient and his family
- Counseling and training for patients, families and teams.
- Designing guidelines and procedures and implementing them in the pain field in the organization.
- Involving relevant multi-professional treatment factors in hospitalization and in the community.
Study program:
The study program lasts about a year and includes 687 study hours, of which:
- 287 theoretical study hours in the format of 2 study days a week.
- 400 clinical hours in the format of 3 days a week.
Prerequisites for applying to the program:
- You have a Master's degree recognized in the State of Israel and at least one of the degrees in nursing.
- You have been engaged and employed for at least two years in the field: at least two years in an institute or pain clinic/ one year as a pain coordinator or one year in a pain clinic and another year in another description dealing in the pain field.
*Those with two or more years of experience working int the field of pain outside the clinic/institute will be submitted for discussion and decision by the advisory committee. - You have successfully completed and met the requirements of an advanced nursing course in one of the following areas:
- Critical care
- Emergency medicine
- Intensive care for geriatric patients
- Geriatrics
- Oncology
- Nephrology
- Midwifery

The application is made through a public appeal.
To apply, you will need to attach:
- CV
- Certificates of education (Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, post-baisc nursing course).
- Signature of human resources at the institution that employs you, approving employment in the field, on an application form (Appendix 2).
- Reference letter by the nursing management at the employing institution.
