Shani arrived Saturday morning for her shift in the NICU, during which she went to the operating room to treat a woman in the advanced stages of pregnancy who was shot.

Shani recalls that the infant was born without effective breathing and with a very slow and low heart rate. The staff managed to stabilize the infant only to be horrified by the discovery that the baby suffered from three gunshot wounds.

Despite the tremendous efforts, the baby’s life ended before it began.
