Treatment of elderly people with acute and chronic diseases
This advanced course is a part of a cooperative acute chronic module, and deals with the treatment of elderly people with conditions of acute and chronic diseases, at home and hospitalization.
Preparing the Health System for the aging of the population requires coping with a growing complexity of medical and nursing conditions, as well as responding to the requirements of the elderly and their families during hospitalization and at home.

The advanced course in geriatrics is focused on the treatment of elderly people with acute and chronic diseases, with an emphasis on the unique characteristics of treatment at home and during hospitalization. The program provides knowledge and skills of treatment, with an emphasis on treatment management processes of defined conditions, as well as conservation and rehabilitation of functions that have been damaged during the acute disease.
Clinical practice is held in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit or in the general Intensive Care Unit, as well as in active geriatric units (supportive palliative care, rehabilitative geriatrics, Geriatric Rehabilitation Assessment Unit), clinics and Institutions (geriatric clinic, Urodynamic clinic, Diabetic clinic, etc.), institutions for chronic geriatric hospitalization, including wards for nursing care and for mentally-frail people.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes 610 hours, of which:
330 hours of theoretical study
280 hours of clinical practice
Prerequisites for admission to the program
- You are a citizen or a resident of the state of Israel
- You are holding a registered nurse licensure certificate in the state of Israel
- You have a bachelor's degree in nursing.
An accredited degree in nursing is a degree accredited by interinstitutional committee at the Salary and Employment Agreements Department at the Ministry of Finance. The list of degrees is updated from time to time in the circular: "Academic degrees accredited for salary purposes in the civil service, Clalit Health Services and Hadassah Medical Center and Shaare Zedek Medical Center - nursing" (Hebrew). - You have passed the placement test for the advanced nursing courses with a grade of 70 or higher, and the grade is valid (3 calendar years from the exam date), or you are eligible for an exemption from the selection exam

State licensure examination
After meeting the studies requirements and completion of studies, and for the purpose of registering as an advanced nursing course graduate, you must successfully pass the licensure exam. The exam content and structure change from course to course and are adapted to the field and knowledge acquired.
In this course you will take the licensure exam in a simulation-based method.
The simulation licensure exams include clinically representative conditions, which visualize reality, and to solve them one should make use of the knowledge and psychomotor and communication skills acquired in the course.
The exam includes switching between different stations (simulations), determined according to the characteristics of the field of training you have studied.
Among the station types:
- Performance station simulator (manikin)
- Simulation station with an actor
- Inquiry station about the simulation with an actor
- Analysis station of a clinical conditions by a video film/ audio recording (computerized)
- Knowledge station with a computer – 50 multiple choice questions
The licensure simulation exams for the advanced nursing courses are held in MSR – The Israel Center for Medical Simulation – The National Education Center for Health Professions, The Chaim Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer.
