Specialized Training in Pediatric Intensive Care

Nurses specializing in pediatric intensive care work in pediatric ICUs caring for critically ill children. Their key responsibilities involve identifying and promptly managing medical complications; providing lifesaving emergency interventions when a child's condition acutely deteriorates; educating and advising hospitalized children and their families, guiding and supporting other nurses on the pediatric ICU healthcare team.
Main activities of nurses specialized in pediatric intensive care:
- Medical admission of a child to the ICU, initial evaluation and immediate treatment upon admission, identification and treatment of immediate complications
- Ongoing treatment of a child in the ICU - determining a therapy plan, performing routine evaluations ("rounds"), monitoring and direct treatment of common medical conditions
- Referring for lab tests, imaging and medical and paramedical consultants
- Performing unique treatments that only specialized nurses are permitted to do as part of the therapy
- Managing drug therapy - initiating, balancing and stopping treatment
- Managing symptoms
- Monitoring and treating people with complex conditions, identifying abnormalities and complications, providing first aid and referring to medical care
- Providing life-saving care in emergencies
- Instructing the family of a hospitalized child
- Advising and guiding nursing staff
- Preparing for transfer or discharge
- Collaborating with a multi-disciplinary team
- Involving relevant community care departments
- Writing up medical summary reports and correspondence
Curriculum
The study program lasts about a year and includes 750 hours of classroom study, of which:
- 350 theory study hours, 2 days a week
- 400 hours of practice, 3 days a week
Prerequisites for applying to the program
- You hold a Master's degree accredited by the State of Israel, and at least one of the degrees is in nursing
- You have been working for at least two years in a pediatric intensive care unit
- You passed and satisfied the requirements of a post-basic course in one of the following areas:
- Pediatric intensive care
- Intensive care of neonates, newborns, infants and children
