Neonatal nurse practitioners deal with providing medical treatment to premature babies, including providing immediate response to the needs of routine care for premature babies, locating and identifying abnormalities and providing immediate primary care in acute and life-threatening situations, providing medical treatment to premature babies in a variety of complex situations, consulting and guiding the premature baby's family and the staff in the ward.
Main activity of neonatal nurse practitioners:
- Admission of the newborn and premature baby, immediate assessment and treatment upon admission of the newborn, identification and treatment of immediate complications.
- Routine newborn and premature care – determining a treatment plan, performing routine assessments ("visit").
- Monitoring and direct treatment of common situations.
- Referral to laboratory tests, imaging and medical and paramedical consultants.
- Carrying out unique treatments recognized to be carried out by the specialist nurse as part of the treatment plan.
- Management and medicine treatment – initiation, balance, discontinuation of treatment.
- Balancing symptoms
- Follow- up and treatment of patients in complex situations, detection of abnormalities and identification of initial treatment and referral for further medical treatment.
- Providing life-saving first aid in emergency situations.
- Guidance of the premature baby's family and the care teams.
- Preparations for release.
- Mixing relevant treatment factors in the community.
Study program
The study program lasts about a year and includes 780 study hours, of which:
- 350 theoretical study hours in the format of 2 study days a week.
- 430 clinical hours in the format of 3 days a week.
Prerequisites for applying to the program
- You have a Master's degree recognized in the State of Israel and at least one of the degrees in nursing.
- You have been employed for at least two years in the field.
- You have successfully completed and met the requirements of an advanced nursing course in one of the following areas:
- Premature and newborn intensive care.
- Intensive care for premature babies, newborns, babies and children.
