Alexey Shmeklov

Killed in the battle at the Sderot Police Station

Alexey, an inspector with the Israeli police counter-terrorism unit, son of Yelena Shmeklov, a nurse at the surgical department at the Rambam Medical College.

Alexey was killed during the fighting at the police station in Sderot. Died at the age of 34 years. Alexey left behind his parents, sister and partner.

Alexey wrote a poem that was read at his funeral by his sister, Yulia:

"I am fighting the good fight,
the best of them all.
Not for money and not for honor,
but for good to win over evil.
Light over darkness.
No matter what history says,
I know which side I’m on.
Who is behind me.
Who is with me,
and especially who I am facing.
I am with my people, against the enemy,
there is no stronger bond.
I want it to be like this, as much as possible, forever.
Maybe it’s exaggerated and poetic, but I want to write forever.
This is the front and this is how I am measured in everything I do,
I don’t forget it for a second.
And it can be tough when we dive in.
I am ready.
I am calm over there.
Fighting is the only thing that counts."

May he rest in peace.
