Medical treatment to surgical hospitalized patients
Surgical nurse practitioner provide comprehensive medical care to hospitalized patients. What does the curriculum for this specialty include and how to apply?
The field of surgery deals with providing comprehensive medical care to a surgical patient who is hospitalized. This treatment includes the routine treatment, balance of symptoms, detection and identification of abnormalities and the provision of immediate primary care in acute and life – threatening situations as well as counseling and training for the patient, his family and the department staff.
The main activity of surgical nurse practitioners:
- Performing a pre-operative assessment and treating related medical problems, with the aim of bringing the patient to surgery in optimal condition.
- Receiving patients to the ward.
- Preparing patients for the operating room.
- Receiving patients from surgery, assessment and treatment immediately after surgery, identification and treatment of immediate complications.
- Pre–surgery treatment in the ward – determining a treatment plan, performing routine assessments, follow-up and treatment.
- Referral for laboratory tests, imaging and medical and paramedical consultants.
- Carrying out unique treatments recognized to be carried out by the nurse practitioner as part of the treatment plan.
- Management of medicine treatment – initiation, balance, discontinuation of treatment.
- Balancing symptoms.
- Follow-up and treatment of patients in complex situations, detection of abnormalities and identification of complications, provision of initial treatment and referral for further medical treatment.
- Providing life-saving first aid in emergency situations.
- Guidance of the patient and his family.
- Counseling and training for the care teams.
- Preparation for release.
- Involving relevant treatment factors in the community.
Study program
The study program lasts about a year and includes 750 study hours, of which:
- 350 theoretical study hours in the format of 2 study days a week.
- 400 clinical hours in the format of 3 days a week.
Prerequisites for applying to the program
- You have a Master's degree recognized in the State of Israel and at least one of the degrees in nursing.
- You have been employed for at least two years in the field.
- You have successfully completed and met the requirements of an advanced nursing course in one of the following areas:
- Oncology
- Critical care
- Intensive care for the geriatric patient

- Reference letter by the nursing management at the employing institution.
