Comprehensive medical care for older adults
Geriatric nurses provide comprehensive medical care to older adults. What does the curriculum for this specialty include and how to apply?
Geriatric nurses deals with providing medical care to older adults, including routine treatment for common disease, identifying emergency situations, providing primary care in the emergency situation and referral to an appropriate medical provider.
Main activity of geriatric nurses:
- Independent management of medical care in routine situations.
- Identification of exceptions and emergency situations.
- Providing primary care and referral to a medical provider.
- Assessing and diagnosing patients.
- Referral to ancillary test and imaging test.
- Determining a treatment plan for the patients, according to the results of the diagnosis.
- Medication management.
- Carrying out unique treatments defined for specialist nurses in the field, as part of the established treatment plan.
- Referral of patients to further treatment by a medical provider.
- Referral of patients to professional factors, according to the assessment made and the treatment plan.
- Counseling for patients and care teams.
- Engaging in teaching and research in the field.
- Dealing with morbidity and health promotion in this field.
Study program
The study program lasts about a year and includes 750 study hours, of which:
- 350 theoretical study hours in the format of 2 study days a week.
- 400 clinical hours in the format of 3 days a week.
Prerequisites for applying to the program
- You have a Master's degree recognized in the State of Israel and at least one of the degrees in nursing.
- You have been engaged and employed for at least two years in the field.
- You have successfully completed and met the requirements of advanced nursing course in one of the following areas:
- Geriatrics
- Intensive care for a geriatric patient
- Critical care
- Primary care in the community
Applying for the program
Application for the program is made through the public appeal.
To apply, you will need to attach:
- CV
- Certificates attesting to education (Bachelor's degree, Master's degree, post-basic nursing course).
- Signature of human resources at the institution that employs you, approving employment in the field, on an application form (Appendix 2).
- Reference letter by the nursing management at the employing institution.
