Growing the Nurse Workforce
Adding more nurses would benefit the healthcare system.
Increasing the number of nurses through a four-stage assimilation model is one of the objectives of the Nursing Division.
The Nursing Division has set a goal: to increase the rate of nurses employed in Israel to 7 per 1,000 people by 2027.
Methods of action to achieve the goal:
We have created an assimilation model based on 4 stages
- Definitions and data: establishing a five-year plan and, accordingly, spotting national goals and official data for increasing the number of nurses.
- Challenges: identifying challenges and factors contributing to and preventing the increase in the number of nurses.
- Modes of action: developing and structuring modes of action and creating an intervention program to increase the number of nurses.
- Assimilation and implementation: assimilation and implementation of the plan of action to increase the number of nurses.
Plan of action to increase the number of nurses
Sample goals
In the training institutions:
- Training 250 students at least, in each of the academic nursing educational institutions (6,600 students per year);
- Initiating mentoring and empowering processes for students, decreasing organizational dropout;
- Recruiting and marking the required resources for actions/interventions for increasing the number of nurses in the organization;
- Developing excellence tracks for nursing students;
- Extending and providing accessibility of clinical fields for student training in the required national scope;
- Developing projects and collaborations with health organizations in hospitalization, and in the community;
- Creating student empowerment programs in the transition from training to organizational absorption
In healthcare organizations, hospitalization and the community:
- Extending and providing accessibility of clinical fields for student guidance;
- Assimilation of clinical guidance for nursing students, as a central organizational goal of the work plan;
- Drawing up an appreciation and recognition scheme for the professional activity of nurses in an organization;
- Using communication and organization media for positioning the role of the nurse and exposing the nurse to additional target audiences, with an emphasis on professionalism and clinical expertise, empathy, compassion, sensitivity, and dedication;
- Defining the required manpower mix in the organization;
- Generating career paths in the managerial and clinical fields and leadership programs, and creating an organizational excellence track for nurses;
- Building programs for maintaining the competence of nurses in critical intersections along the career path;
- Developing joint projects with training frameworks, enabling the implementation of mentoring processes, becoming acquainted with the career paths of nurses in the organization, and integrating nursing students in projects promoted by the organization.
